CREATIVE SAMPLE CONSULT $25

Send 12-15 pages (one poem per page) and a copy (PDF, pic, or screen shot) of the program application's guidelines and we'll help you prepare a solid writing sample to submit for grad school, fellowships, residencies, or conferences. Services include helping you select the strongest poems and providing line edits. 4-day turnaround.

ONE-ON-ONE CHAPBOOK WORKSHOP

      

This virtual workshop is part revision, part generation, part what-the-heck-are-chapbooks-for-anyway. 

Round One:  Send us 10-12 poems for line edits and revision suggestions. 

Round Two: Once we discuss the first round of line edits, you will get 5-7 prompts chosen to help fill out your arc. 

Round Three: Line edits and revision suggestions for the new poems. 

When the new poems are revised, we will discuss arc and order of the entire set of poems (15-19 total), and provide you with 5 saddle stitched copies of your chapbook. (This is not a publication, there will be no isbn. It's just a way to see a physical manifestation of your chap). 

The turn around for this is self directed, but should not take more than 2-3 weeks.

Catching up with co-editor Stacia Fleegal

My co-editor and writing bestie Teneice is super busy. You can’t keep this woman from making books. She makes books all the livelong day. We also edit them now, so check that out.

We decided to write these “what are we up to now that we aren’t publishing authors on BL every other week” posts. You know what Teneice is up to, so it’s my turn, I guess.

In the past year, I’ve done two things I never thought I would do: I switched genres and I began teaching.

$30 to edit up to 32 pages of poetry? Are we nuts or awesome, or both?

BL’s co-founders are now offering editing services, but it wasn't an easy move for us to make.

You can’t throw a rock in the lit world without hitting someone or something that asks writers for money. We’ve never been into reading fees, and we’ve never held a contest. Despite knowing qualified and committed writers who make a living as editors—and being qualified and committed ourselves—we always thought of BL has a non-capitalist venture.

So, here’s why the new project, in both our words:

Hey friends of Blood Lotus! It’s been a while, and the first thing I want to say to you all is a great big THANK YOU for hanging out with us for the last nine years. Stacia and I are still chugging away on different projects, both together and on our own, and as we transition over to a literary blog, I thought I’d take this opportunity to share what I’ve been up to.

One of the things that absolutely fascinates me is how we continue to identify with place, actual locations on a map, in an increasingly virtual world. I have lived in the Midwest most of my life and proudly identify as a Midwesterner. However, a lot of other areas overlap in the Midwest: Rustbelt, Appalachia/Affrilachia, The Great Plains, The Ohio River Valley, and each of these areas contribute to the rich diversity of the Midwest. My Ohio Valley Midwest is different from someone else’s St. Louis Rustbelt Midwest, is different from someone else’s Iowa City Midwest.

To speak to this, I hope you’ll keep an eye out for my upcoming blog posts titled: Reply All. For the first round of Reply All, I’ve asked some Midwest writers of different locations and backgrounds to comment on their Midwest Identity. I’ll post excerpts from our Reply All email discussions in the coming weeks.

BL is closing up shop

Dear Internet, readers, and BL authors,

Beginning today, the first day of 2015, Blood Lotus will be ceasing a regular publication schedule and closing to submissions indefinitely. 

This decision did not come easily. When we co-founded BL in 2006, our mission was to create a space to publish visceral, imagistic, memorable writing. For eight years, we did so through quarterly issues, and for the past year, through bimonthly features of individual authors. It is work we have enjoyed immensely. But concurrent to nine years of publishing BL have been dozens of new jobs, new cities, new projects, new human babies (it really seems like dozens of babies!) and so on. We would rather end BL than let it languish and not get the attention it deserves. 

But we aren't quite done yet.

Kristina Moriconi is a poet and essayist. She received her MFA in creative writing from Pacific Lutheran University’s Rainier Writing Workshop in Tacoma, Washington. Her work has appeared most recently in Fox Chase Review, Under the Sun, and Crab Creek Review. She is the author of a chapbook, No Such Place (Finishing Line Press, 2013), and she is the 2014 Montgomery County Poet Laureate.

Jessica Maybury is an Irish fiction and poetry writer who lives in Turnhout, Belgium. She reviews comic books at Girls Like Comics and regular books at The Rumpus. In 2011 she co-founded ESC zine, a literary and visual art journal, and is still in love with it.

Always a pleasure to publish writers who are into reviewing and promoting other writers, but also reviewing comics? Too cool.
